At one time my aunt used to put on high end estate sales around the Flint Michigan area. I believe it was either 2015-16 she called me up one morning and wanted me to come over and give her a hand with sorting the merchandise. I have a BA jn history and i am generally interested in old things ( grand parents raised me) im 39 in comparison. so she called me over because, the older gentleman who has passed was an avid outdoors man and kinda just needed me go through some stuff and tell her what’s good, what’s junk, what is valuable. at the end she takes a cut and gives the rest to the family. I’ll tell you what, i did this for her quite a few times. the first couple times it’s a bit weird going through a persons worldly possessions. What could have me t so much to that person is literally just getting sorted and either getting thrown in the dumpster or sold for pennie’s on the dollar.
So to the point. for helping her and usually either just gives me stuff or gives me a hell of a deal. to put it mildly she’s a yuppy. so when she found this knife she didn’t want to sell it. so she just gave it to me as basically she didn’t want to deal with a big evil knife. However, she told me the back story on it.
Originally, this knife belonged to the deceased guys brothers who joined the marines during WW2. Growing up they a nieghbor who was a tool and die maker at one of the local GM plants in flint. the tool and die maker used a piece of Spring steal to make the blade. supposedly the story went before the estate owners brother shipped out. The nieghbor gave him this knife with one condition. He said i’m giving you this knife to gut krauts with. Now i don’t know with him being a marine if he actually was stationed in Europe. If that part of the story is true the guy was probably stationed in the pacific.
on the butt it is inscribed J.lazar USMC Flint Michigan
It is a pretty cool knife. it no longer has an edge on either side and the tip has a burr. It is very heavy and well made. i’m assuming it wasn’t the tool and die makers first knife. This is a cool knife with a good back story.
Along with knife i picked up an old generator and a 1933 mossberg single shot .22.
