I assume they act as an apparatus for you to fasten to your person, but as they are so stubby and short, I can’t imagine your sheathe would go.

To allow it to be directly stitched to clothes, rather than on a belt. The V42 had similar on its sheath, so it could be worn low on the leg, below the hem of a winter coat.
