I really enjoy discussing knives. This is my fixed blade collection. Mostly cold steel here. I always found cold steel to be a good balance of “good” steel . Good function. But most important affordable. I will tell you my thoughts on each one. From the top
st my Gurkha Kurki plus . High carbon 3v steel. This knife is what I carry instead of a hatchet. It chops so well. And is still usable to sharpen a stick. Great for building a lean-to. Or clearing thick Canadian brush. I purchased this knife at a huge discount due to a blemish on the steel. and the blemish polished off with almost no effort. Handle is perfect for my hand with a nice palm swell. And if zombies ever attack this will be the one .
nd SOG jungle primitive. Good cheap machette . Lighter weight than the kurki. It’s an ok chopper will clear light to medium brush. Spine saw is unfortunately decorative and will not saw through a branch. I don’t remember what I paid for it but it wasn’t a lot. I’ve used it for over night out door experiences where I wanted a large blade didn’t bring my kurki because I was bringing an axe.
rd cold steel marauder aus 8 steel. This is almost a phantasy knife. I thought it might make a good large out door knife . However it is a little light for its length. I feel if I tried to chop with it I would end up with a bent blade. The handle is very comfortable and the knife feels fast in your hand for its size. The guards are plastic rubber. The one place this knife would really excel is knife fighting. Something I have no interest in lol. But if I ever need it I know where it is lol
th cold steel bushman . This is one of my most used knives. It was cheap and is indestructible . It has been used to process a mountain of fire wood. With its no handle handle to break it is great for batoning. We also use it in the yard for cutting / edging the lawn. Or anything else you shouldn’t use a knife for.
th . Cold steel leather neck tanto. Another “fantasy knife “ as it’s a combat style knife . I did process a piles of wood with it before I purchased the bushman. It is a very sturdy knife with a very strong tip. The handle is comfortable . The knife has a perfect balance. This is the knife I leaned all my “flip tricks” with.
th a Mangnum by Boker. Sorry I don’t know its name. This has been my go too knife when I don’t know what to carry. It does a little bit of everything well. It’s another indestructible knife. The blade is very thick. The knife cops very well despite its short blade. The front edge of the “ tanto” bladeshape has just enough curve for skinning. I also feel like I could use this knife to pry a door open if I had too. I have used it once for ( kitchen) demolition. it worked well for prying cabinets off a wall. Normally I would never use a knife for a pry bar . This is the one knife I would with no worry’s.
th cold steel mini tac. A good cheap EDC fixed blade. I also lash its kydex sheath to the Kurki sheath when I carry the kurki . This way I still have a knife for small work when carrying a large knife.
th cold steel outdoorsman lite. German 4116 steel. I’m very happy with this knife. It was cheap to purchase. And is sooo light. This is what I carry when weight matters. Keeps sharp. Comfortable grippy handle. Even when wet ( bloody) bone breaker on spine works well. Best knife I own per dollar spent.
th cold steel roach belly 4116 steel. Another cheap light knife. Used mostly for food preparation and camp life. Great for cutting onions and making hot dog sticks.
th. Cold steel Canadian belt knife. 4116 steel . Cheap and very very comfortable in the hand. Great for small detail work. Carving. Skinning butchering small game. This knife is a knock off of a very famous Canadian knife from Nova Scotia. But at 1/4 of the price .
These last three knives by cold steel are all very light. Very sharp and were cheap to purchase. The most important aspect of a knife for me is how well it works. And these last three knives have all worked so well. It really makes it hard for me to spend big bucks on some thing like the Esee 5 I have been lusting over.
