So this dagger was given to me as an heirloom. It had rust, and a few good chunks of pitting… i took some #0000 wool steel and some cleaner and lubricant to it. Knocked a majority of pitting and the rust off. But after i wiped it down a lot of the dark etching has faded… as well as some wear marks….would i be better off taking it to a blade smith to possibly restore it? Its a charlton ltd. V70 dagger with giraffe bone scales.

Dip that thing in some strong coffee.

Definitely don’t let the bone get in the coffee if it isn’t stabilized. It will stain easily in that. I’d say go with some ferric chloride or hydrochloric acid that has been very diluted with water. It won’t give a deep, black color, but it will show up better and shouldn’t hurt the bone. You will need to resharpen afterwards. You can use some clear nail polish on the edge to prevent it from being etched but if it’s diluted enough it shouldn’t hurt it.
