Convoy L21B w/ thicker gasket has an interesting beam profile!

I made a thicker 3030 gasket for my L21B CSLPM1.F1 yesterday and wanted to share my results and hopefully get some feedback. I’ve only done this a couple of times and am still pretty news to this.

My L21B shipped with a ~1.4mm 5050 gasket and I replaced it with my custom ~1.7mm 3030 gasket. The gasket measures somewhere in the range of 1.65 – 1.75mm depending on where I measure and how tight I close the calipers. About as good as I can build it.

I think the results are quite interesting, see first picture.

This is spot + corona, not spot + spill. Please keep in mind that it’s extremely difficult to take pictures of a hotspot with an iPhone camera. I tried my best to adjust ambient lighting and camera settings to capture a result that represents what I can see in person.

What I find interesting is that unlike all my other Convoy OSRAM throwers the corona has a very well-defined border, like the hotspot itself. On all my other lights the boundary between corona and spill is soft and petal-ly.

What is also interesting is that the hotspot seems to be well-focussed at distance. A point sized emitter at the focus point of a parabolic reflector should throw out perfectly parallel light, a beam that does not diverge at distance. This does something like that. When I point it at a wall and start walking backwards it almost seems like the hotspot does not grow, only the corona. This of course means the hotspot is absolutely tiny, yet intense. Outside this does give an interesting dual hotspot beam where up to about 150m you get this big corona hotspot and then at larger distances the tiny actual hotspot takes over.

I did some comparison shots with a C8+ with the same emitter. The corona of the C8+ is much more diffuse and you can clearly see how the hotspot diffuses at distance while it stays defined / small on the L21B with only the corona growing in size.

Not sure what to think, are these expected / good results? I think it’s quite a nice beam profile, but I find it hard to compare to the 1.4mm 5050 gasket my light shipped with. Didn’t take any good pictures and swapping back and forth is time consuming. I also find that how tight the bezel is on this light has huge impact on the beam, so it’s all a bit hard to judge by eye for me.

    Thoughts?
